Zig Zag Rag

Yesterday my husband and I stopped in this independent fabric store on the way home. That morning on my way home from dropping him off at school they had a sign on the window about a hand embroidery workshop this weekend that I thought I'd sign up for. I love embroidery, something a dear friend at church taught me when I was 17.

When we went in yesterday afternoon the classes were full... sad... so I signed up for their emails for other possible other workshops of course! We couldn't just leave a fabulous store like this, so we perused... and found this awesome rag quilt done with zigzags!

When I was younger my Mom helped me make a pink and white rag quilt with rectangles. So I absolutely had to share this with my Mom right away! I took a closer picture of it so I could figure out how they made it. Whoever patented this design I love you. Just thought you should know and I am giving you all of the credit.

It looks like it would be perfect for a baby blanket, warm, cuddly, and you can do it in any color boy or girl!

Okay, so I believe they took 4 or 5 sheets of fabric and sewed across them with Zigzags.

Next, Cut zigs and zags in between the sewed zigzags. But only cut the top layers, leave the bottom layer unharmed so that it stays together.

Last, Bind the edges. Granted that they actually sewed a big square around it and then cut inside of that square, but if you aren't afraid of sewing your binding by hand (it terrifies me, but they look so good!) then do it the way I explained.

Afterthought, if you want a double sided rag and have a machine that can handle it... add a few more layers and leave the middle sheet (or two, we don't want it to be flimsy) unscathed when cutting and cut both sides. Sew cute!

Chenille Sticks!

Anywho, they are pipe cleaners! Which is what they were affectionately called in my home growing up.

I have been working on stockings for Bobby and I for Christmas and have decided to do Bucilla stockings for our fancy ones that will hang and get dusty... but not actually fill them. I am still working on ideas for the ones we will actually use, but for now I am doing these and they are a little bit time consuming. I have finished one (only took 2 and 1/2 months to finish, working on them every chance I can). 

So the snowman one is finished, pictures to come, and am working on the Santa Clause stocking. The goal is to finish by Thanksgiving.

Okay so the snowman stocking still needs his tag, but that is because we haven't decided who's is whose... whose is who's? whose is whose? who's is who's? Which belongs to whom?
